About this site
This is a family tree for the Goyetche family of Isle Madame, Nova Scotia: the descendants of Jean Goyetche, born around 1763 near Bayonne in the Basque country of France, and Marguerite Mathieu. It currently holds 2,410 people in 780 families across 9 generations.
Where the data comes from
All of the genealogy here was researched by Darryl Goyetche of Cochrane, Alberta, who started in the early 1970s with conversations with his grandmother Maria in Petit de Grat and published the results at goyetche.ca. This site is an extension of that work: the same family records, from his March 2024 Family Tree Maker database, presented in a modern web app with an interactive tree, statistics and a page for every person. Each person page links back to the original page on goyetche.ca, which also carries Darryl's history articles, family news and photo galleries.
Who makes this
Darryl Goyetche is the primary creator: the research, the records and the family history behind every page here are his, gathered over more than fifty years. This website, the interactive tree, the walk and the statistics are built and maintained by Zack Goyetche, as a way of carrying that work forward for the rest of the family.
Living people
Like the original site, this one is public. Living people appear by name so that the family can be followed, but without dates, places, notes or sources. Anyone born after 1926 with no recorded death is treated as living, and people the original site withheld entirely are shown as “Private”.
Limits of the data
The copy is faithful to the original pages, including their gaps. Spelling of names and places follows the records (Goyetche, Goyeche and Goyetch are one family). A small number of people were entered twice in the original database and appear twice here. Some people have no recorded sex, and for the youngest generations it was inferred from the given name. A note on a person's page says when a surname was guessed rather than taken from the original index.
Using the site
The tree page draws the whole family on one canvas. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom, and click anyone for their details. The timeline view places people by birth year; the fan view shows all nine generations at once. Every person also has their own page, reachable from the search box, the name index or the surname list.
Corrections and additions are welcome; the family history only improves when more of the family contributes to it.
